About This Test

This course teaches the South Dakota motorcycle knowledge test. It covers safe riding: gear, controls, curves, traffic, hazards, passengers and alcohol. It is the test for a motorcycle endorsement or a motorcycle license, and it is separate from the car knowledge test.

Passing the knowledge test does not by itself let you ride. You must also pass an on-cycle skills test, unless South Dakota waives it for a rider who has completed an approved rider course - one of the things that differs most between states, so confirm it with the agency.

The test is given by South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Driver Licensing, not by this site.

You sit it at a licensing office. South Dakota DPS office locations lists them, and many take appointments rather than walk-ins, so check before you travel.

The endorsement age, the documents to bring, the fee, and whether an approved rider course can stand in for the on-cycle skills test are all set by South Dakota, and they change. Confirm them on South Dakota DPS licensing.
