A Commercial Pilot Certificate lets you act as pilot in command of an airplane carrying persons or property for compensation or hire (14 CFR 61.133). It is the certificate a pilot needs to be paid to fly — banner towing, aerial survey, charter work under the right operating rules, and the step before a flight instructor certificate.

You must be at least 18, hold at least a private pilot certificate, and log at least 250 hours of flight time that meet the specific minimums of 14 CFR 61.129. A second-class medical certificate is needed to use the privileges.

The knowledge test is the CAX (Commercial Pilot — Airplane) exam: 100 questions, 70 correct to pass, three hours. Passing it is one step toward the practical test, not a substitute for it.

Get an FAA Tracking Number on IACRA, get your instructor's endorsement for the knowledge test, then book the CAX at a PSI testing center through PSI's FAA exam site.

This course drills 225 questions. Each one is written from the FAA's own Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Airplane Flying Handbook, or 14 CFR parts 61 and 91, and every question names the document or regulation section that proves its answer. The FAA's published CAX sample questions have no answer key, so they were used only to see which subjects the test covers.
