About This Test

A Commercial Pilot Certificate lets you act as pilot in command of an airplane carrying persons or property for compensation or hire (14 CFR 61.133). It is the certificate a pilot needs to be paid to fly — banner towing, aerial survey, charter work under the right operating rules, and the step before a flight instructor certificate.

You must be at least 18, hold at least a private pilot certificate, and log at least 250 hours of flight time that meet the specific minimums of 14 CFR 61.129. A second-class medical certificate is needed to use the privileges.

The knowledge test is the CAX (Commercial Pilot — Airplane) exam: 100 questions, 70 correct to pass, two and a half hours. Passing it is one step toward the practical test, not a substitute for it.

Get an FAA Tracking Number on IACRA, get your instructor's endorsement for the knowledge test, then book the CAX at a PSI testing center through PSI's FAA exam site.
