This course is for anyone who must be certified under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act to maintain, service, repair or dispose of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment: HVAC and refrigeration technicians, appliance repairers and apprentices. Type I covers small appliances with 5 pounds of refrigerant or less, Type II high-pressure equipment, Type III low-pressure equipment, and Universal is all three.
Every test has a 25-question Core section and 25 questions for each type. The mock test is the Universal format: 100 questions in four sections of 25. The pass mark is 70 percent (40 CFR 82, Appendix D to subpart F), and the programs grade each section on its own, so each needs 18 of 25. The certification does not expire.
You take the test with one of the EPA-approved certification programs, in person or with a remote proctor. The Core, Type II, Type III and Universal tests are closed-book and proctored; Type I alone may be an open-book test, with an 84 percent pass mark.
