The civics test is one part of the naturalization interview. A USCIS officer asks you up to 20 of the 128 published questions out loud, and you pass as soon as you answer 12 correctly — the officer stops there.
This is the test for anybody who filed Form N-400 on or after 20 October 2025. If you filed before that date you take the 2008 version instead, and studying this one would waste your time. The date on your receipt notice is the one that counts. You can check which form you filed on your USCIS account.
**If you are 65 or older** and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 years or more, you study only 20 of these questions, the officer asks 10 of them, and 6 correct answers pass. You may also take the test in the language of your choice. Those 20 questions are marked on this site.
The real test is spoken and you answer in your own words. This course drills the same facts as multiple choice, which is a faster way to learn them — but practise saying your answers out loud before the day.
You do not book the civics test. It happens inside your naturalization interview, at the USCIS field office named on the appointment notice USCIS sends you. Bring that notice, your permanent resident card, and any documents the notice asks for.
**8 of the 128 questions are not drilled here**, and that is deliberate. Their answers depend on who currently holds an office or on which state you live in, so any answer printed here would go stale — and an applicant who learned a stale answer would fail on our say-so. They are listed on this page with the reason, and USCIS publishes the current answers at USCIS test updates. Learn those 8 from USCIS, not from us.
Some questions have several correct answers and USCIS accepts any of them. Where that is so, this course marks one right and shows you the rest, so you never learn a true answer as a false one.
The questions come from USCIS's own published list (M-1778 (09/25)), word for word. It is a United States government work, so it is free for anyone to use. The 2008 version is also on this site if it turns out to be the one you need.
