A Flight Instructor Certificate lets you give the training and endorsements that student, private, commercial and other pilots need (14 CFR part 61, subpart H).

You must be at least 18, hold a commercial pilot or airline transport pilot certificate with an instrument rating, log at least 15 hours as pilot in command in the category and class, and get an endorsement for instructional proficiency in stall awareness, spin entry, spins and spin recovery (14 CFR 61.183).

There are two knowledge tests. The Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) test covers how people learn and how to teach, assess and manage risk. The FIA (Flight Instructor — Airplane) test is 100 questions, 70 correct to pass, in two and a half hours. This course covers both.

Get an FAA Tracking Number on IACRA, get your instructor's endorsements for the knowledge tests, then book them at a PSI testing center through PSI's FAA exam site.

This course drills 208 questions. Each one is written from the FAA's own Aviation Instructor's Handbook, Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Airplane Flying Handbook, or 14 CFR parts 61 and 91, and every question names the document or regulation section that proves its answer. The FAA's published sample questions have no answer key, so they were used only to see which subjects the tests cover.
