This course is written only from free U.S. Government publications. It is not taken from, endorsed by or connected with any private certifying organization, and it is not that organization’s test. It is for general study: it may or may not match what a private course or its test asks. It does not replace hands-on training, and it does not certify you.
This course is for people who are training to be pool or waterfront lifeguards, and for lifeguards who want to review. It covers patron surveillance and rotations, drowning and rescue, emergency action plans, first aid and CPR basics, spinal injury care, pool water quality and chemical safety, lifeguard qualifications, and open-water hazards such as rip currents and lightning. Many numbers in this course are national recommendations; your state or local pool code and your employer can set different rules.
You become a lifeguard by completing a hands-on lifeguard course from a certifying organization that your state or local health department recognizes, with in-water skills, CPR, AED and first aid tested by a certified instructor. Your employer then adds facility training before you go on duty. This course is study support only: it does not certify you and does not replace hands-on training.

Is there an official test, and how is the mock test scored?
No government or certifying body publishes a test for this course, so the mock test here is ours: 50 questions, 40 to pass (80 percent). 50 questions, 40 correct to pass.
How are the questions checked?
Every question is checked before it goes live, and again each time the site is updated.
Does this course certify me?
You become a lifeguard by completing a hands-on lifeguard course from a certifying organization that your state or local health department recognizes, with in-water skills, CPR, AED and first aid tested by a certified instructor. Is this course free?
Part of every course is free: a slice of every topic and one short practice test a day. Full access is $10 a month for one course, or $20 a month for every course on the site.
